- This world religion got a foothold in the Netherlands after World War II. In the 1950s, the first mosques were opened and the Koran became available in Dutch. Most Muslims in the Netherlands, however, are not natives, but immigrant workers, particularly from Turkey and Morocco, people from former colonies, asylum seekers from Islamic countries, and their descendants. At present, the ap proximately one million Muslims form the third religious group, after the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (PKN). Many Muslims still have strong connections with their old countries, and their mosques, schools, and organizations bear ethnic colors. This has caused integration problems in the lib eral Dutch society, in combination with native fears of radical Is lamic fundamentalism. People like Frits Bolkesteinand Pim Fortu ijn intensified the integration debate in the 1990s, which is still a hotly debated topic. Some authorities argue that the presence of for eign imams hinders the integration process. Leiden University got permission to start the teaching of Islamic theology in 2006.
